격세지감

이사를 위한 청소를 하다 삼천포로 빠졌다. 묵혀둔 것들을 들척이다 발견한 내용... 진짜야? 싶은 것이 재밌다.

20세기의 극심한 사회변화는 우리만의 이야기인 줄 알았는데, 90년 전 한 미국 대학교의 신입생 규칙을 보니 그들에게도 만만치 않은 변화가 있었던 것 같다. 이 시대엔 코메디 같은 규칙의 어조는 어찌나 진지하고 엄숙한지... ^^

담배도 안되고, 술도 안되고, 학교에서 여자들과 히히낙낙하는 것도 안된단다. 극장에서 좋은 자리에 앉는 것도 안되고, 전차에서는 윗사람이나 숙녀들을 서게 하면서 좌석에 앉는 것도 안되고... 캬바레도 못가고, 까페도 못가고...

Ninety years ago the Freshmen Rules were officially adopted on September 30, 1916 when a special Student Council committee was granted permission from the Medical Faculty to enforce the rules. The committee consisted of the president of the senior class, the presidents of the three respective medical fraternities and one non-fraternity man elected from the student body at large.

The Freshmen Rules of 1916

1. A freshman is any student spending his first year in any Deparment of the University and who is eligible for freshman teams.
   
2. Each and every freshman shall wear at all times, except Sundays and special occasions, a cap of the following description: A blue skullcap with a white button. All freshman must have caps by October 7th.
   
3. No freshman shall smoke in or about the building nor shall he smoke a pipe on the streets of Buffalo. The smoking room in the Medical building is for upperclassmen only.
   
4. No freshman shall indulge in alcoholic liquids, nor shall he be allowed in the G.A. or in any of the cabarets or cafes of Buffalo, unless accompanied by an upperclassman.
   
5. Freshmaen must not flirt with girls during school hours.
   
6. No freshman shall be permitted to sit in the first six rows, or in the boxes of any theatre unless accompanied by parents or upperclassmen.
   
7. No freshman shall occupy a seat in a trolley car when by so doing a lady or an upperclassman may be obliged to stand.
   
8. Painting or otherwise defacing the buildings or equipment of the University is forbidden.
   
9. All freshmen shall be in their rooms by 11:30 p.m.
   
10. No freshmen shall wear a moustache, nor shall he preparatory school in any manner, nor shall he wear any emblem or insignia of that institution.
    

It is incumbent upon freshmen to remember and observe these rules without having to be spoken to by upperclassmen.
